iPhone Duo has a replaceable folding display, Apple will change it when you want

iPhone Duo is coming with a replaceable folding display. Foldable smartphones have faced one problem since their very initial stage: the crease. Though later technological developments have successfully mitigated the problem quite a bit, Apple seems to have taken extra precautions in building its first foldable, the iPhone Duo. As for the crease, Apple has a clever fix for it. If a crease appears and starts to annoy you, you can swap out the layer that hides it. Notably, the foldable is set to go on sale from this month. Pre-orders kick off on October 16, while the overall sale begins on October 23.

Apple's vice president of hardware engineering, Kate Bergeron, revealed this in an interview with Angelica Siciliani Fendi. According to Bergeron, the nano-texture cover layer above the inner display can be removed and replaced. "It's actually replaceable, which is a really nice thing for the customer," she said, adding that you can peel off the old layer and get a new one.A fresh layer

So, what does this layer actually do? Its main job is to hide the crease running down the middle of the folding display. Bergeron said Apple put in a "significant amount of engineering work" to help the layer wear well for as long as possible. But nothing lasts forever. If the layer wears down or the crease becomes more visible over time, you don't have to live with it. It sounds a lot like swapping a screen protector, only this one is part of the phone's design.

Now, what will it cost? In the U.S., customers who buy AppleCare Plus for the iPhone Duo can get the cover layer replaced for $19 (around Rs 1,829), according to Apple's website. The price without coverage hasn't been revealed yet. Officially, replacements will likely be limited to Apple Stores and Apple Authorised Service Providers. Whether customers will be able to peel the layer off themselves remains to be seen.

The replaceable layer fits a bigger pattern. After Apple introduced the iPhone Duo last month, its executives explained how the company deliberately worked to maximise durability and keep the crease issues that trouble other foldables to a minimum.
