Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Army Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir reportedly had an "unprecedented confrontation" over a proposed military operation that could trigger a war with Iran ahead of the elections on Tuesday.

According to Israeli Channel 12 reported Sunday, Zamir has resisted carrying out the military action - that remains unspecified - and requested signed documentation from Netanyahu regarding legal authorisation for it.

"This relates to an action that could lead to a flare-up with Iran, at a sensitive and dramatic moment, creating this [potential] miscalculation," a military source was quoted as saying.

The report also cited another source that said there is military concerns that the political leadership could exploit tensions with Iran for "political benefit".

Channel 12 added that the hostility between Netanyahu and Zamir were evident at discussions on Sunday at the Palmahim Airbase, where the atmosphere in the room was described by a source as "extremely sour".
