Supreme Court that Steven Galloway’s public — but unsubstantiated — branding as a rapist was a reputational challenge similar in magnitude to what Bill Clinton faced for having an affair with a White House intern.
Other comparables, testified Pace Group partner Norman Stowe, included the affair scandals of Tiger Woods and Martha Stewart’s insider trading. He pointed them out as examples of people whose careers recovered after a scandal, and believed that Galloway’s reputation was recoverable.
Stowe was on the stand as a witness for the defendant A.B., whom the former author and UBC creative writing professor is suing for defamation. A.B. and Galloway had a consensual affair from 2011 to 2013 while A.B. was a student in his department — but after the affair ended, she began to allege that he had sexually assaulted her. In November 2015, word of the allegations spread through the department and then the whole county, bringing Galloway’s career to a halt.
