Japan opposition alliance agrees plan to split on founding party lines - Nikkei Asia

TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Lawmakers in Japan's main opposition party, the Centrist Reform Alliance, agreed Wednesday to a plan to split, with most of its members leaving along their former party lines, after three-way talks on a fuller merger collapsed last week.

As part of the plan, the departing former Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan and Komeito party lawmakers are expected to form a caucus in the House of Representatives, in a bid to retain the bloc's status as the largest opposition group in the powerful chamber, sources familiar with the matter have said.

The alliance's executives are expected to finalize the plan to split the around seven-month-old party in a meeting later in the day.
