Japan PM Takaichi meets Ukraine President Zelenskyy

Japan's Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy have held their first in-person talks on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.

The leaders talked for about 20 minutes at the UN Headquarters in New York on Tuesday.

Takaichi noted the importance of relevant countries working together in unity to support Ukraine amid Russia's ongoing invasion in order to achieve a just and lasting peace as soon as possible.

She said Japan will never waver in its consistent position of standing with Ukraine. She added Japan will continue to promote assistance to Ukraine and sanctions against Russia in coordination with the international community.

Zelenskyy expressed his gratitude for Japan's humanitarian and energy-related support.
