(Blair Gable / Postmedia) By Jesse Kline November 5, 2026 at 11:18 p.m. Last Updated: November 6, 2026 at 9:52 a.m. Remember, remember the fifth of November: the day Prime Minister Mark Carney turned Canada’s finances to ember.

It would not surprise me if Carney, the former governor of the Bank of England and a British citizen from 2018-2025, chose Nov. 5 to release his second budget. It is the date on which the United Kingdom commemorates Bonfire Night, a celebration of the monarchy’s survival after Guy Fawkes’ plot to blow up Parliament in 1605 was foiled.

Whether this date was chosen to foreshadow the Crown’s eventual triumph over the White House’s ongoing attacks on our sovereignty or to prevent lowly newspaper scribes from drinking beer next to a bonfire is not entirely clear. What Carney has gone to great pains to relay to Canadians, however, is that the Liberals have everything under control.
