The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) said it is stepping up night-time policing across the city, with specialised units deployed to high-risk areas and busy entertainment precincts.

The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) said it is stepping up night-time policing across the city, with specialised units deployed to high-risk areas and busy entertainment precincts.

JMPD said eight police stations in the city that feature among the national top 30 crime hotspots are now receiving targeted interventions.

The move comes as concerns over the safety of women remain high following the discovery of 9 women’s bodies across Ekurhuleni since July, although there is no indication that these cases are linked to Johannesburg.

JMPD said its regional night-shift units are now conducting high-visibility patrols after midnight, including in entertainment areas such as Maboneng, Braamfontein, Rosebank, Melville, Greenside and Sandton.

The operations are being carried out with the South African Police Service (SAPS), private security companies and other law-enforcement agencies, with JMPD saying women and other vulnerable groups are a particular focus.
