While the Pittsburgh Steelers officially attributed cornerback Joey Porter Jr.’s sudden mid-practice exit to a lingering back issue, veteran reporter Mark Kaboly uncovered a critical detail in the locker room that paints a far darker picture of the relationship between the player and the team.
During practice, Porter briefly took the field for early open drills before walking off with a trainer. However, his actions immediately following that exit signaled something much deeper than a routine visit to the medical staff.
On his podcast, “Kaboly and Mack,” longtime Steelers reporter Mark Kaboly told his co-host he noticed something odd about the locker room shortly after practice concluded. Kaboly noticed a telling physical clue - Porter was gone, and his locker had been carefully tidied by team staff rather than the player himself.
"For a guy that injured his back yesterday and walked off the field with a trainer, you would think he would be getting some treatment, but I do believe he left the building relatively soon after that," Kaboly noted.
He elaborated on the subtle details that only a veteran beat reporter would spot.
"You could tell by how his locker was put together after the practice that somebody put his practice jersey up. He wasn't back in the locker room,” explained Kaboly.
“My feel on being in the locker room for 25 years [is] that he gave the jersey to a trainer or an equipment guy, and he's the one that hung it up, 'cause nobody hangs up their practice jersey like that was hung up at his locker. Just never seen that before in my life."
