Justice Fux Votes to Acquit Bolsonaro of All Coup Plot Charges - Folha de S.Paulo
Justice Luiz Fux of the Supreme Federal Court (STF) voted on Tuesday to acquit Jair Bolsonaro (PL) of the crimes he was accused of in the coup plot. The score now stands at 2–1 for conviction. In the first split of the trial, Fux also argued for the nullification of the case.
In a 12-hour speech, he clashed with rapporteur Alexandre de Moraes’s methods. He said no executive acts by Bolsonaro for a coup were demonstrated, downplayed the coup draft, and ruled out Bolsonaro’s responsibility for January 8.
He also voted to convict former aide-de-camp Mauro Cid and General Walter Braga Netto for violent abolition of the democratic rule of law, forming a majority to hold them accountable. For the other charges, he sided with acquittals.
He further voted to fully acquit five defendants: former Navy commander Almir Garnier, former ministers Paulo Sérgio Nogueira and Anderson Torres, General Augusto Heleno, and Alexandre Ramagem, former head of Abin. The session resumes today at 2 p.m.
