Kalimantan Forest Fire Haze Delays 73 Flights at Supadio Airport - Tempo.co English

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Branch Communication & CSR Department Head at Supadio International Airport, M. Joko Wahyudi, said thick haze from forest fires in Kalimantan disrupted airport operations. A total of 73 flights were delayed or rescheduled over the past three days. 

“Based on the schedule, several airlines were supposed to depart this morning, but due to the visibility condition, which was only 300 meters until 10:00 AM, no flights have taken off,” said Joko Wahyudi in Sungai Raya on Monday, September 14, 2026, as quoted from Antara. 

He mentioned that visibility at the airport was only around 300 meters on Monday morning, so flights could not operate yet. “The limited visibility condition has been occurring since Saturday (9/12). During this period, a total of 73 flights to and from Supadio Airport were affected by delays or rescheduling,” he explained. 

Joko revealed that only 11 flights were able to operate on Saturday, including six arrivals and five departures. Nine flights were conducted on Sunday (9/13), comprising five arrivals and four departures. As of Monday, the airport authorities are still awaiting information from each airline regarding whether to cancel or reschedule flights. 

The low visibility on Saturday also led to the cancellation of dozens of flights at Supadio. The airport authorities said that ensuring flight safety was their main consideration when making operational decisions. 

The Airport Quality & SMS Department Head of Supadio International Airport, Yakobus Thomry Toto, said they have increased personnel in the check-in area and waiting room to handle passengers affected by flight delays or schedule changes. “In addition, we also distribute masks, snacks, and water to service users affected by flight delays,” he said. 

The airport has also enhanced information dissemination through notice boards and conducted Airport Collaborative Decision Making (A-CDM) with airlines, AirNav Indonesia, and BMKG to expedite the exchange of flight condition information. Through this coordination, airlines are expected to provide earlier information to passengers in case of flight delays or schedule changes due to visibility conditions.
