Kentavius Street on Dennis Allen's tone to Bears defense after opener

While the Chicago Bears offense has been making a lot of headlines following their explosive showing in a 59-37 win over the Carolina Panthers, there were still some glaring issues on defense.

Chicago's defense gave up 37 points against the Panthers, including multiple explosive touchdowns on blown coverages. The defense also only mustered two sacks in the entire game, which was their average last season, and quarterback Bryce Young had plenty of time to pick apart the secondary.

The day after the game, defensive tackle Kentavius Street was asked about defensive coordinator Dennis Allen’s tone with the defense after the Panthers game, he had a rather hilarious response.

“Have you ever disappointed your parents?” Street said.

Despite the end result, Young actually had a pretty good day. He threw for 361 yards and three touchdowns; his lone interception came just before halftime on a heave to try to get the Panthers in field goal range. Wide receiver Jalen Coker went off with eight receptions for 138 yards and two touchdowns. Carolina also averaged nearly six yards per carry.

Allen had a simple message for his defense after this performance according to Street: “Don’t go out there and do your own thing. Don’t worry about being perfect.”

These are some of the problems the Bears defense had last season, especially against the run. So, it is a bit concerning to see these same issues again. But at the same time, it is not entirely surprising given Chicago did not make any significant additions to the defensive line in the offseason. 

If the Bears want to change that at some point this season, this would really have to be done through a trade since there are no competent free agents who excelled against the run last season.
