The State government has renamed the Electronics & Information Technology (IT) department as the Department of Information Technology, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Future Technologies to align the State’s technology governance with emerging global priorities.
The change follows the announcement made in the Governor’s policy address for 2026 regarding the repositioning of the department in line with the State’s technology vision.
The decision reflects the expansion of the department’s mandate beyond conventional Information Technology and electronics. The department has also been closely involved in promoting start-ups, deep-tech ventures, and technology-led innovation.
“The renaming gives formal recognition to this broadened role and positions Keralam to respond more effectively to fast-changing developments in the global technology sector,” said a release.
The renaming is also part of a strategy to tap the potential of Keralam’s knowledge capital and make knowledge industries one of the mainstays of the State’s economy.
A series of institutional reforms are also under way, including the Kerala State Digital Technology Mission, The Future Corporation, and Semicon Keralam to strengthen the State’s digital governance architecture, future technology capabilities, semiconductor ecosystem, and knowledge industry base, the communication said.
