KM Virgo Capsizes in Java Sea, Government Focuses on Evacuation Before Thorough Investigation

BANJARMASIN, KOMPAS.com - Transportation Minister Dudy Purwagandhi confirmed that the government will conduct a comprehensive investigation into the KM Virgo Transport 8 accident in the Java Sea on Wednesday (9/23/2026).

The investigation will commence after the victim evacuation is completed. Evacuation remains the government’s top priority.

The government is prioritizing evacuation as the initial step. Afterwards, the cause of the accident will be pursued through fact-based field investigations.

“The most important thing for me is evacuation first. Evacuation, then investigation. Because every accident certainly has different causes,” Dudy said, as reported by Antara on Wednesday (9/23/2026).

Dudy stated that the investigation results must be able to extract critical lessons to strengthen the national maritime safety system.

The government will verify all information related to the KM Virgo accident, starting from the accuracy of the manifest, the condition of the cargo, to other aspects that could impact maritime safety.

The investigation will also examine alleged cargo securing issues, the completeness of ship documentation, fleet seaworthiness, and the condition of the crew.

“So, we are looking for the lesson learned that we need to see moving forward,” Dudy explained.

“They say the manifest information is correct, but is it really? That needs to be tested. And there are many other factors, including the seaworthiness of the ship and the crew’s condition,” he added.

Dudy emphasized that all maritime safety regulations are already established.

The main challenge lies in the consistent enforcement of these rules by all responsible parties in the field.

The investigation results will serve as the basis for evaluating various aspects of maritime operations.

This will allow corrective actions to be designed according to the identified causes.

The government hopes the investigation will uncover the full cause of the accident and reinforce the enforcement of maritime safety.

The ultimate goal is to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
