Postgraduate doctors training at Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) hospitals are set for a substantial stipend increase after Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab approved raising their monthly allowance from Rs75,000 to Rs104,390, ending a long-pending demand - but house officers will have to wait for their turn.
The approval was given at a City Council meeting following a proposal submitted by the KMC Medical and Health Committee, Chairman Bashir Khaskheli said.
The increase brings the stipend for doctors enrolled in FCPS and MCPS training in line with directives issued by the Sindh Finance Department and the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP).
According to official documents, a CPSP notification issued on May 30, 2026 directed institutions to pay FCPS and MCPS trainees a stipend equivalent to the salary of a Grade-17 employee, amounting to around Rs104,000 per month. The KMC proposal subsequently fixed the monthly stipend at Rs104,390. Khaskheli said the issue had remained pending for a considerable period and was brought before the mayor, who subsequently approved the increase.
However, the same relief has not been extended to house officers. Their proposed monthly stipend increase from Rs45,000 to Rs69,000 has been put on hold. According to the mayor's direction, a report on house officers' services and performance in treating patients will first be prepared. Their case for a stipend increase will then be reconsidered at a subsequent meeting. Khaskheli said the increase for postgraduate doctors represented the resolution of a longstanding issue and that the relevant department would move to implement the decision in accordance with the Health Department Act, 2022. He added that a decision on house officers would be taken after their performance assessment.
