Komnas HAM Urges Prabowo to Curb Papua Conflict

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) met with Presidential Chief of Staff Dudung Abdurachman at the Bina Graha KSP Building in Jakarta on Thursday, September 10, 2026.

During the meeting, Komnas HAM commissioner Atnike Nova Sigiro briefed officials on security developments in Papua, highlighting the escalating intensity of armed conflicts. "We request that the KSP convey to the President the need to establish policies aimed at reducing armed conflict and violence in Papua," Atnike said in a written statement on Friday, September 11, 2026.

According to records from Komnas HAM's Papua Team, the first half of 2026 saw 42 violent incidents and armed clashes resulting in 59 deaths and 50 injuries.

In 2025, the commission recorded 97 similar incidents that left 119 dead and 43 injured. Crucially, the ongoing armed conflict and violence in Papua have triggered widespread displacement among local residents.

Given these conditions, Atnike added, Komnas HAM is calling on the government to convene key institutions, including the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI), National Police (Polri), Ministry of Health, Ministry of Social Affairs, Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, and Ministry of Housing and Settlement Areas.

The goal, she noted, is to ensure that response policies fulfill the fundamental rights of displaced persons, particularly access to adequate housing, healthcare, education, and other essential needs.

On the same occasion, Presidential Chief of Staff Dudung Abdurachman stated that the KSP will host a coordination meeting inviting several relevant ministries and agencies. "This includes regional administrations at both the provincial and regency levels," said the former Army Chief of Staff.
