Kyle Cottam shoots 58 to post lowest score in PGA Tour Americas history

The 59 has long been the mythical number in golf but maybe 58 should be. Pro golfers breaking 60 happens much more frequently that it used to, but now guys are going even lower. Kyle Cottam is the latest with the proof.

The product of Knoxville, Tennessee, shot 12-under 58 on Saturday. Cottam had an eagle and 10 birdies at the Digital Commerce Group Open on the PGA Tour Americas, a developmental circuit. Uplands Golf Club in Victoria, British Columbia, simply could not contain him.

Cottam's 58 is the lowest score posted on the three-year-old development circuit. A big part of the story was his hole-out eagle from 108 yards on the 16th hole. His Saturday 58 was 10 shots better than his opening round Thursday. He takes a two-shot lead into Sunday's final round.

“I was absolutely surprised. Obviously, you don't wake up in the morning and think you're going to shoot 58,” Cottam said. “I've been driving it great, which was surprising because today I didn't drive it very good, but everything else was obviously awesome. Today was just my day.”

Cottam played at Clemson and turned pro six years ago. He made the Americas tour via PGA Tour Americas Q-School in March.

It was a year ago in this same event that A.J. Ewart shot 59. Cottam's 58 is the tour's sixth sub-60 round.
