Kyler Murray injury update as Vikings QB suffers concussion vs. Packers - USA Today

The Minnesota Vikings lost their starting quarterback, Kyler Murray, after he took a hard hit to the head in the first quarter of their Week 1 game against the Green Bay Packers, which the Vikings eventually won 39-22.

Murray was sliding to the ground when Packers safety Javon Bullard hit him hard. Murray took a blow to the helmet and remained down on the ground after the play.

Murray received medical treatment on the field while Bullard was flagged for a 15-yard personal foul. He was eventually able to walk off the field under his own power but headed straight to the locker room for further evaluation.

The Vikings announced Murray was ruled out of his team debut because of a concussion.

Vikings coach Kevin O'Connell did not have an update about Murray's injury during his postgame news conference.

"That'll be a kind of take it day-by-day and see how he comes in tomorrow," O'Connell said, referencing Murray.

O'Connell did acknowledge that by the time he had gotten onto the field to talk to Murray after the hit, the quarterback was "conscious." The 41-year-old coach also provided anecdotal information about his postgame interaction with his top signal-caller.

"I did just see him, and he seemed to be doing pretty well," O'Connell said. "But once again, I wouldn't medically quote me on that."

Murray completed 3 of 5 passes for 19 yards and an interception before exiting the game because of the injury. The 29-year-old also logged nine rushing yards on two carries.

Murray will now turn his attention toward returning to the field for the Vikings in the coming weeks. He will have to clear the NFL's concussion protocol to see the field.

Murray was injured after he slid for a 2-yard gain on a third-and-7. The veteran quarterback was hit hard by Javon Bullard as he went to the ground and took a blow to the helmet in the process.

Murray remained down after the play and received treatment on the field from the Vikings' medical staff. He eventually walked off under his own power but was taken straight back to the locker room for further evaluation.

Murray will remain out of action until he can clear the NFL's concussion protocol. That will first entail a follow-up concussion evaluation on Monday, then a five-step process to return to the field.

There is no timetable for Murray to clear the NFL's concussion protocol.

Carson Wentz is the Vikings' backup quarterback to open the 2026 NFL season. The 33-year-old is in his second season with the Vikings and posted a 2-3 record and completed 65.1% of his passes for 1,216 yards, six touchdowns and five interceptions across five starts last season.

Wentz has a 49-49-1 career record across 99 starts with the Vikings, Philadelphia Eagles, Indianapolis Colts, Washington Commanders, Los Angeles Rams and Kansas City Chiefs.

The Vikings currently have three quarterbacks on their 53-man roster. Below is the pecking order within the unit.

McCarthy is the Vikings' emergency, third-string quarterback for Sunday's game. The 2024 first-round pick battled Murray for the starting job during the offseason but was demoted to the third string upon losing the competition.

McCarthy has a 6-4 career record across 10 starts. He has completed 57.6% of his passes for 1,632 yards, 11 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

The Vikings also have second-year quarterback Max Brosmer on their practice squad. He is not available to play against the Packers.
