For the third year in a row, KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) has recorded the highest number of deaths as a result of police action.

For the third year in a row, KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) has recorded the highest number of deaths as a result of police action.

The latest annual report from the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) shows that 134 people died in the province.

Following is the Eastern Cape, with 108 people being killed by its police during the 2025/2026 financial year.

The methods of KwaZulu-Natal police have come up at the Madlanga Commission, with IPID’s deputy director in the province, Jon Len, testifying that they may be heavy-handed in their approach to fighting crime.
