Laid off after 12 years at Oracle, employee likes it because no more 13-hrs shift or micromanagement

Oracle is in the middle of another round of layoffs, affecting employees across the globe. For some, the news has brought shock, anxiety, disappointment and even an unexpected relief. Following the layoffs, employees have taken to social media to share their experiences, including one former employee who says they were laid off after 12 years at Oracle. But instead of stress, the employee says they feel relieved, as now they can leave behind long hours and constant pressure they were facing in the company.

The employee shared their experience on Reddit in a post titled “12 Years at Oracle: Closing One Chapter, Starting Another”, following Oracle's latest round of layoffs. The company reportedly started the job cuts on September 14, with affected workers receiving emails saying their roles had been eliminated as part of a broader organisational change. Oracle has not disclosed the total number of employees affected in this latest round.

While many Oracle employees are sharing their stories and the stress around losing their jobs, for this Reddit user, the layoff was not entirely unexpected. They said they had already been considering a change after spending 12 years at Oracle, where they worked on a critical, revenue-generating project. However, they allege that the long hours, pressure and micromanagement had become too much.

“I worked at Oracle for 12 years, and during that time I was part of a critical, revenue-generating project. I was often working 12–13 hours a day, along with a lot of micromanagement and unnecessary pressure from management, particularly within the DB organization,” the employee wrote.

Despite the long hours and pressure, the employee says they are choosing to view the layoff positively. They had already been thinking about leaving Oracle, and the sudden end to their time at the company may now give them the push to start something new.

“I was recently laid off, but honestly, I had already been thinking about making a change. So, I’m choosing to look at this positively and believe that things happen for a reason,” they wrote.

The employee also appears to have had a relatively positive experience with Oracle’s severance package. “Oracle has also taken care of me well in terms of the severance package, they have given time for RSU vesting and I’m grateful for everything the company has given me over the past 12 years,” they said.How much is Oracle paying in severance?

While there is no official figure for the maximum severance in the latest layoffs, documents reviewed by Business Insider earlier this year said Oracle's standard US severance plan offers four weeks of base salary, plus one additional week for each year of employment, capped at 26 weeks of base salary. Under this formula, an employee who has worked at Oracle for 12 years would reach the 26-week maximum.

Meanwhile, this is not Oracle’s first round of layoffs. The company’s workforce had already fallen by about 21,000 employees, or roughly 13 per cent, during fiscal 2026.
