Landmark book documenting history of Merebank launched - IOL

The Legacy of Merebank: Our People, Our Culture, Our Stories came alive on Sunday as generations of residents, former residents, and community contributors gathered at the MTSS Hall for the official launch of a landmark publication.

The event on September 13 represented the completion of nearly four years of intensive research and community contributions. The 555-page book brings together photographs, memories, personal accounts, and historical material tracing the development of Merebank. Presented as a work by the community, for the community, no single author is credited because its stories were gathered directly from local archives and shared memories.

For programme director and cultural historian Kiru Naidoo, the gathering reflected the distinct character of the area.

“The launch of the Merebank Book Project proved the social event of the season. More than six hundred people spanning the generations arrived in all their finery, dazzling in the rich silks of Kanjipuram saris and tailored suits to celebrate a local history told with warmth, care and depth,” said Naidoo.

He added that inclusivity was central to the afternoon, with local schoolchildren demonstrating the continuity of a community shaped by diversity in gender, race, class, and faith.

“The book is a masterstroke of storytelling over layers of history. Merebank set a new benchmark for biographies of place,” Naidoo said.

The event programme included musical memories, digital presentations, poetry and limerick recitals by learners, historical reflections, sketches, addresses, and performances.

The line-up featured a keynote address by Dr Imtiaz Sooliman, an address by Prof Ashwin Desai, reflections by Prof Managay Reddi, and contributions from several local schools. Formal proceedings included the reading of family names, presentation of certificates, a digital reveal, the book's unveiling, a cake-cutting ceremony, and the distribution of copies to guests.

For Viren Singh, chairperson of the Merebank Book Legacy Trust and convenor of the project, the community turnout was a defining moment.

“I was awestruck by the support of the people of Merebank who turned out in their masses to witness this historic event, which records the history of our beloved community for posterity,” Singh said.

The publication extends beyond a collection of dates. Its contents track early development through the apartheid era, detailing the growth of civic organizations, schools, sporting bodies, religious institutions, businesses, cultural groups, family life, environmental struggles, and the impact of industrialization.

In the book’s foreword, Ela Gandhi places the story within South Africa's broader history, writing that national history has often been recorded from a colonial perspective. She argues for understanding history through those who actively participated in community life, describing Merebank’s narrative as one of struggle, triumph, courage, resilience, and growth.

The preface reinforces this by describing Merebank as a “biography of a place,” recording political foundations alongside the classrooms, sports fields, music, and social networks that built a sense of identity.

That breadth was central to Prof Ashwin Desai's address, where he noted that the book pays homage to those who endured imprisonment and detention during the anti-apartheid struggle.

“And so we pay homage. And that's what the book does. It pays homage to one of the first people incarcerated in the armed struggle, Kisten Dorasamy. It pays homage to the heartbreaking story of Ronella Pillay who was locked up, detained; a vegetarian and they forced eggs down her throat. We salute her,” Desai said.

A legacy in print: The Legacy of Merebank: Our People, Our Culture, Our Stories captures the history, experiences, memories and voices that have shaped the Merebank community across generations.

Project manager Kumarasen Govender highlighted the dedication behind the long journey to publication.

“The launch of the book is a culmination of almost 4 years of dedicated work and we are incredibly proud of the book we delivered. Seeing our community's overwhelming appreciation made every single moment worth it,” Govender said. “The MTSS Hall was packed to capacity and the warmth and camaraderie in the room was simply unforgettable.”

For Arvani Sewpersad, programmes committee member and stage manager, the occasion held deep personal meaning.

“The book launch was an incredibly emotional and deeply moving moment for me and my family, especially to witness a history so closely connected to our family’s journey in Merebank, as a proud granddaughter of the Juggernath family,” she said. “This book is more than a record of history, it is a tribute to a legacy that must never be forgotten, and a reminder that the footprints of those who shaped Merebank will continue to live on through generations.”

The publication’s dedication echoes that sentiment: “This book is your legacy, as it is told by you, about you.” Its closing sections detail the methodology, ethical framework, and the work of the Merebank Book Legacy Trust that brought the vision to fruition.
