LASRRA targets registration of private school students - Punch Newspapers

The Lagos State Residents Registration Agency has set a one-year target to register all students in private schools across the state. This, the agency said, followed the Lagos State Ministry of Education’s directive mandating compulsory LASRRA registration for private school students. The General Manager of LASRRA, Bilikis Adebiyi-Abiola, disclosed this during a sensitisation programme for residents of Ijede LCDA, held in Egbin Kingdom, Lagos State, on Thursday. Adebiyi-Abiola said the recent directive had boosted the agency’s registration figures as private schools had begun inviting its officials to their schools to register their students. Adebiyi-Abiola said, “The recent announcement by the Ministry of Education really boosted our numbers. Currently, before that, LASRRA was only required for public schools. But now, private schools are part of it, and we are seeing various private schools inviting us to come to their schools, for free, of course, to register their students. And we are very encouraged by that. “We have a plan that within one year, we will be able to register all the students in private schools across the state.” She explained that the registration would enable the government to have a reliable number of learners across schools, thereby improving education planning. “It’s something that will enable the students to gain a lot because the ministry will have a number that they can use to track every learner across the various schools, and it will enable them to plan appropriately to ensure that we can enhance the education of the students,” she said.See more Punch stories on Google.Add Punch on Google The LASRRA boss said the agency was working with traditional rulers and communities across the five divisions of the state to sensitise residents on the importance of registration. Adebiyi-Abiola said LASRRA registration was critical to effective government planning and would enable residents to access various services provided by the state government. She continued, “We are here at Ijede, Egbin Kingdom to be precise, and this is just one of the sensitisation programmes that we are doing around, across all the five divisions of the state, in partnership with traditional rulers, to go into the communities and enlighten people on the importance of registering for LASRRA. “We are letting them know that LASRRA registration is very important; it’s critical. It enables the government to plan properly, and it also allows them to get various things that they require from the Lagos State Government.” She added that the agency was taking its registration exercise to schools and hospitals to make the process easier for residents. She disclosed that LASRRA would deploy technology to enable schools to schedule registration visits more easily. “We have some technology that we are going to deploy. In the next couple of weeks, you are going to see technology that we are going to use to allow schools to easily schedule LASRRA visits to schools,” Adebiyi-Abiola said. The General Manager also said residents who had registered for LASRRA could collect their plastic identity cards at designated local government offices closest to their registered addresses. She said, “When we got the cards printed, we looked at the address of the resident, and we’ve taken those cards to the local government closest to their address.” According to her, LASRRA had started contacting residents whose cards were ready for collection. In his remarks, the Obateru of Egbin Kingdom, Oba Adewale Oloyede, urged residents of the community and neighbouring areas to register with LASRRA and the Independent National Electoral Commission. The monarch said the sensitisation was particularly timely as the country approached the 2027 general election. “It’s a very good thing that we’re having this kind of sensitisation at this period, as we are fast approaching the elections in January next year – the presidential election and the other elections. This will give more awareness to the community,” the monarch said. The monarch urged residents to come out en masse and register as Lagos residents, and to register with INEC ahead of the elections. “My message to the residents of Egbin community and the other areas is that they’ve been coming out; they’ve been supportive of the government of Lagos State. But they should come out en masse, make sure they are registered with Lagos State as a resident,” he said. “They should also register with the Independent National Electoral Commission for the coming election, because that is one of the main things that we are facing now. That’s the main focus, our main focus in Nigeria as at today and in the state as a whole,” Oloyede added.
