Left Party wins Berlin election as AfD gains ground

Germany's Left Party, led by Elif Eralp, won Berlin's state election on Sunday with 25.3% of the vote, ahead of Chancellor Friedrich Merz's Christian Democratic Union (CDU), according to preliminary results.

The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) gained strongly to finish third with 16.2%. The Left Party will need coalition partners to form a government and take control of the mayor's office.
