LGE 2026: Cape Town is booming, but can its residents still afford to live there? - EWN
The Democratic Alliance (DA) is making the case for another term governing Cape Town, pointing to the city's municipal finances, infrastructure investment and efforts to improve water resilience.
But a CapeTalk interview with Deputy Mayor Eddie Andrews has highlighted the difficult questions facing the party as it asks voters to renew its mandate: can the city's reputation as a well-run municipality translate into greater affordability for the people who live there?
Speaking to presenter Lester Kiewit, Andrews defended the city's approach to service delivery, housing, investment and municipal finances while responding to concerns raised by callers about property rates, rising costs and the legacy of apartheid-era spatial inequality.
The discussion also raised questions about foreign property investment, the use of contractors and whether residents' submissions meaningfully influence decisions made by the city.
