Lindsay Clancy Family Friend Says Patrick Interview Was ‘Missed Opportunity’ - Newsweek

A childhood friend of Lindsay Clancy told Newsweek that Patrick Clancy’s first television interview since his ex-wife’s mistrial was a “missed opportunity,” arguing that the widely watched 60 Minutes interview left key questions unanswered and did not raise awareness about postpartum psychosis and mental health.

"I feel like it was a missed opportunity to kind of clear the air,” Brittany Romano, who grew up on the same street as Lindsay Clancy, told Newsweek. “I don't think we learned anything new.”

In the interview, Patrick Clancy spoke about grief, forgiveness and the lasting impact of losing his three children.

Clancy reiterated his belief that his ex-wife’s actions were a result of severe mental illness, not malice. "I saw headlines that say 'killer mom' and 'baby murderer monster' and none of them were accurate,” he said.

He also revealed the personal toll the case has had on him, and how he struggled with suicidal thoughts and suffered a severe panic attack while testifying during the trial.

Clancy also spoke about the online conspiracy theories that have swirled as the trial gained more publicity, saying that such claims were “deeply harmful” to his children’s legacy and distracted from what he believes should be the focus of the case: awareness of postnatal mental illness.

Newsweek reached out to Patrick Clancy's attorney and CBS 60 Minutes via email.

Romano, 33, captured public attention during Lindsay Clancy’s trial after footage of her smiling during the trial spread across the internet.

Then dubbed the “Green Dress Lady,” Romano was at the trial as a journalist, credentialed by Vanity Fair which was “interested in the prospect of a personal essay” by Romano because of her personal connection to Lindsay Clancy. After footage of Romano went viral during the trial, the publication previously confirmed to Newsweek it had cut ties with her.

Romano grew up on the same street as Lindsay Clancy and said the two families have remained close for decades. She described Clancy as being "like my big sister" during her childhood.

After watching the 14-minute interview on 60 Minutes, Romano felt that opportunities were missed.

“I don't think that the right questions were asked,” she said. “There was nothing about the malpractice lawsuit, nothing about his testimony, nothing about timeline of the night, nothing about why he's speaking nine days before the hearing that decides whether Lindsay is retried or not or if she can move forward."

Alongside frustration with the elements not in the interview, Romano said that she felt it did not deliver in shining a spotlight on postpartum mental health.

"The issue was mental health and postpartum psychosis. And I didn't see any of that there,” Romano said, adding that it felt like Clancy himself did not have a full understanding of postpartum mental illness. “I think that’s evident to everyone... He doesn’t understand what went wrong," she said.

Patrick Clancy was not alone in the interview, joined at the end by his new wife Rachel Danis.

During the interview Danis referred to Clancy as "the most selfless father and supportive partner."

"I can't bring his kids back. But if I can honor them and allow Pat to grieve but also just continue to honor them in the present, it—I guess that's all I can do,” Danis said.

The couple also confirmed that they are expecting a baby together. "I can't wait to tell them about their brothers and sister,” Clancy added.

For Romano, Danis’ appearance felt disjointed.

"I don't know if she was there for moral support or to show the humanity of her,” she said.

“Was he just trying to calm down the noise with Rachel and put the timeline aside? [Then] coinciding with a pregnancy announcement which felt kind of weirdly thrown in there,” she said. “She didn’t help being there.” Romano later added that Danis was "a person at the end of the day" and said she understood why family members or advisers may have encouraged her to appear on camera.

Lindsay Clancy’s case ended in a mistrial earlier this month when jurors were unable to reach a consensus after seven days of deliberations.

As reports in the weeks after have focused on the holdout juror and statements by ex-husband Patrick Clancy, a status hearing is scheduled for September 29, 2026, where the court will discuss next steps.

The biggest unanswered question is whether Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy Cruz will try the case again before a new jury. Prosecutors have not yet committed to a new trial.

Defense attorney Kevin Reddington has said he plans to challenge any retrial on double-jeopardy grounds, arguing there was no "manifest necessity" for the mistrial.
