Lindsay Clancy’s ex-husband reveals why he forgave her for killing their children in first interview since mistrial

Lindsay Clancy’s ex-husband has revealed why he forgave her for killing their three children, in his first interview since her mistrial.

Patrick Clancy spoke to 60 Minutes Sunday, two weeks after a jury failed to reach a unanimous verdict in the high-profile case.

During the trial, Clancy’s defense team did not deny she killed her three children at their Duxbury, Massachusetts home in 2023, but argued that she had been suffering from postpartum psychosis.

Her former partner, interviewed alongside his new wife Rachel Danis, explained he did not know how to handle the condition.

​“I could piece together what it was like to be really, really anxious or depressed, but I didn’t know how to manage a postpartum illness,” he said. “I think mental illness has this ability to be tragically deceptive. So I’m sure there are things that I didn’t see.”

He went on to address the perception of his ex-wife in the media and social media, revealing he decided to forgive Clancy.

​“I saw headlines that said, you know, ‘Killer Mom,’ and ‘Baby Murderer,’ ‘Monster.’ And none of them were accurate,” he continued.

​“I believe that it was her mental illness that caused that. So I shared those words. And I think when it comes to forgiveness, I also felt that if I didn't get there, I would be eaten up inside forever.”

He also revealed that he and Danis, an infertility specialist, are starting a family and planned on sharing the memories of his lost children with their future brothers or sisters.

The grieving father testified during the trial, describing the postpartum mental health battle that led to the killing of Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and eight month-old Callan.

​During the trial, 11 of 12 jurors had been ready to clear Clancy of criminal responsibility due to her suffering from postpartum psychosis at the time of the killings. However, one juror sided with the prosecution, leading to a deadlock that resulted in the declaration of mistrial.

​During the 60 Minutes interview, Patrick Clancy said his ex-wife had made repeated emergency room visits after the birth of their third child. Clancy admitted herself to a program for patients with postpartum depression, but was discharged after just a day of treatment.

​“December was... it was a big struggle for her,” he said, referring to December 2022. “Just a huge lack of sleep; deep, deep depression; intrusive thoughts. And, at the end of that month, she went to hospital.”

​Weeks after being discharged, Clancy would kill their three children. Their father said Callan, the youngest, survived for several days after the deaths of his siblings.

​“I remember just thinking: ‘Just give me one. Just give me one kid, and I would raise him as best I could, and I would give him the best life I possibly could. I'd tell him about his brother and sister,’” he said. Callan died in his arms at the hospital.

Clancy’s ex-husband became the target of much speculation on social media during the trial, with some even suggesting that the father was responsible, in some way, for the killing of his three children.

​Speaking on 60 Minutes, he hit out at the speculation.

​“It’s deeply harmful to the legacy of my children,” he said. “It is a huge distraction from what really matters here, which is perinatal mental health.”
