Local performers and artists are set to benefit from a new public stage as construction gets underway on a memorial park honouring Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis said the renamed Tutu Memorial Park in Lupin Crescent in Milnerton will include an amphitheatre for community performances.

Hill-Lewis said the proposal, put forward by the Milnerton Central Ratepayers Association and the Royal Ascot Homeowners Association, received unanimous support with no objections.

The Lupin Crescent Park in Milnerton, where Tutu and his wife lived for decades, is being transformed into a child-focused recreational space featuring a dog park, flower garden, and outdoor amphitheatre.

Speaking at Thursday's groundbreaking ceremony, Hill-Lewis recalled how the archbishop would often walk through the park, picking up litter and chatting to children.

Hill-Lewis said the park will also include artwork and murals aimed at teaching young people about Tutu's life and legacy.

"We all know how much obvious joy and delight Archbishop Tutu took in the joy of children."
