M.A. Baby to open CPI(M) extended State committee meeting in Kozhikode on September 13

Around 300 leaders from across Keralam are expected to gather for the extended State Committee meeting of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] that is scheduled to begin in Kozhikode from Sunday (September 13, 2026).

According to CPI(M) sources, apart from the State committee members, district secretariat members from across the State and senior functionaries of the CPI(M)’s class and mass organisations will attend the event. Central committee members and Polit Bureau members will oversee the proceedings. Though party leaders claim that the attempt is to create a plan of action for the future, the recent reverses suffered by the CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front in the Assembly polls in the State is high on the agenda. Along with this, the Enforcement Directorate (ED)-led move to implicate former Chief Minister and Polit Bureau member Pinarayi Vijayan, and his son-in-law and Beypore MLA P.A. Mohamed Riyas is also likely to figure in the deliberations.

The central committee of the party has already prepared a review of the election performance and suggested corrective steps. An extended State Committee meeting was reportedly proposed as a platform to discuss the rectification exercise. Ahead of this, the State committee prepared a set of guidelines to be deliberated upon at the extended meeting in Kozhikode.

Asked about the nature of the discussions, a senior leader from North Kerala said that the reasons for the electoral debacle would definitely be discussed.

“We have seen significant erosion of support among working-class voters who have long backed the party. Most of the votes obviously shifted to the Congress and the BJP. Though the LDF tried to champion the cause of development, the middle class, its biggest beneficiaries, too did not support us,” he said.

The leader pointed out that consecutive years in power created a section of party activists who became keen on accumulation of wealth. “This is ironical for a party that vouches for abolition of private property. While the party apparatus lost its direct control of the government over the years, a section of leaders who were close to the powers that be reportedly made financial gains utilising their influence. The extended State committee is expected to come up with a clear plan of action to counter all these tendencies,” the leader said.

M.A. Baby, CPI(M) general secretary, will open the meeting at the AKG Auditorium near the party’s Kozhikode district committee office. After the inaugural ceremony, the State secretary is expected to present the report prepared by the State committee. Thereafter, the participants are expected to engage in group discussions, which will be followed by an open debate involving select members.
