Madlanga Commission to rule on taxi boss Sindane's postponement application - EWN

The Madlanga Commission of Inquiry is expected to hand down a ruling on taxi boss Oupa Bafana Sindane's postponement application.

The ruling is set to be shared via a statement, as the commission is not holding a public hearing on Friday morning.

Sindane, an associate of Mpumalanga taxi mogul Joe Sibanyoni, was subpoenaed to testify on Wednesday, but he submitted a sick note instead.

His advocate, Thabani Masuku, requested a postponement to October, as Sindane seeks a court ruling to prevent his testimony and the use of his messages as evidence.

"The proceedings may well be regarded as having absolutely no merit at all, but that's for the court that hears the application that must decide that."

Meanwhile, evidence leader Matthew Chaskalson questioned the eleventh-hour application, noting the commission had been engaging with Sindane's legal team since July.

"...and I don't want us to establish to set a precedent where people get accommodated for simply not engaging with the commission's processes because those processes are potentially unpleasant for them."
