Maharashtra FDA seizes Rs 5 lakh worth of khoya consignment from Ahmedabad

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in Maharashtra has seized around 1,900 kg of khoya worth approximately Rs 5 lakh in Akola after receiving confidential information about a large consignment being brought to the city from Ahmedabad ahead of the festive season.

Officials said they are examining the consignment, including its transportation and hygiene standards. The FDA has also collected samples of the khoya, a semi-solid dairy product made by thickening milk, for further examination and action as per the prescribed procedure.

The seizure in Akola is the latest in a series of food safety actions carried out by the FDA across Maharashtra in recent weeks. Several thousand spoiled and unhygienic food items have been seized, multiple restaurants have been shut, and action has been initiated against several others.

According to the FDA, information related to Akola traders Kishor Sharma, Vaibhav Patil and Ahuja has emerged in connection with the consignment. However, the investigation is still underway and further action will be taken based on its findings.

Devanand Veer said the department received confidential information about the consignment and acted on it. He confirmed that around 1,900 kg of khoya had been seized and that its value was estimated at approximately Rs 5 lakh.

Officials are yet to ascertain the specific food safety violations associated with the seized product.

The seizure comes ahead of the festive season, when demand for khoya and sweets made from it typically increases. The FDA is examining the quality and hygiene aspects of the seized stock before deciding on further action.- Ends
