Mahindra Thar OG gets more power, tech and six airbags
Mahindra has launched the new Thar OG in India at an introductory price of Rs 10.32 lakh (ex-showroom). Positioned as the successor to the three-door Thar launched in 2020, the Thar OG brings a substantial mechanical and equipment upgrade while retaining the boxy design and off-road-focused character that have defined the SUV. Deliveries are scheduled to begin on October 11, 2026.
The new Thar OG is built around Mahindra’s ‘M_Glyde 4G’ platform, which the company says has higher stiffness for improved on-road and off-road performance. The biggest changes, however, lie underneath. The SUV gets a new rear ‘Pentalink’ suspension with Watts Link, ‘Davinci’ Damping technology with Frequency Dependent Damping (FDD), electric power steering and enhanced NVH damping. Mahindra says these changes are aimed at improving ride comfort, cornering stability, handling and overall refinement.
For buyers who intend to take the Thar beyond the tarmac, the new model also gets an Electronic Locking Differential and dedicated Terrain Modes for Mud, Sand and Snow on four-wheel-drive variants. The system is designed to optimise the vehicle’s performance according to the terrain. RWD versions of the 2.2-litre mHawk diesel and 2.0-litre mStallion petrol also get Terrain Assist.More power from the existing engines
The Thar OG continues with Mahindra’s existing petrol and diesel engine families, but two of them now produce more power and torque. The 2.0-litre, four-cylinder, G20 TGDi mStallion petrol engine develops 162bhp and 330Nm, while the 2.2-litre, four-cylinder, D22 mHawk diesel produces 152bhp and 330Nm. The 1.5-litre, three-cylinder, D117 CRDe diesel remains available and produces 118bhp and 300Nm. Mahindra states that its power and torque outputs remain unchanged.
Transmission and drivetrain combinations vary by variant, with the Thar OG offered with rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive, along with manual and automatic transmissions depending on the engine and trim.Evolutionary design, more equipment
Visually, Mahindra has stayed close to the familiar Thar silhouette rather than attempting a radical redesign. The SUV gets a new grille, circular LED headlamps with signature C-shaped DRLs, LED fog lamps with cornering functionality and new LED tail lamps. The front and rear bumpers have also been redesigned, while a wider track gives the SUV a more planted stance.
The Thar OG also gets new 19-inch alloy wheels on higher variants, marking a step up in wheel size. Two new exterior colours, Artemis Silver and Jeans Blue, join six existing colour options.
Inside, the SUV gets ‘Truffle Brown’ leatherette upholstery, a leatherette-wrapped steering wheel and a soft second-row armrest with an integrated cupholder. Depending on the variant, equipment includes a 10.24-inch touchscreen infotainment system, colour MID, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, cruise control, wireless charging, electrically adjustable ORVMs, rear AC vents, rear demister and a rear-view camera.
The higher-spec ZXT variant adds the new 19-inch alloys, LED lighting, wireless charger, front and rear disc brakes, TPMS, front parking sensors, the upgraded FDD damping technology and leatherette upholstery.Safety gets a significant upgrade
Safety equipment has also been expanded. The Thar OG gets six airbags as standard, including four HPTS (Head Pelvis Thorax Shoulder) airbags for front and rear occupants. It also gets four-wheel disc brakes, ESP 9.3 with rollover mitigation and front parking sensors on higher variants. The base AXT trim, meanwhile, gets dual airbags, brake locking differential, ESP with rollover mitigation, a roll cage, 18-inch steel wheels, halogen headlamps and front disc/rear drum brakes.Mahindra Thar OG price and variants
The Thar OG range starts at Rs 10.32 lakh for the AXT variant with the 1.5-litre D117 CRDe diesel, RWD and a manual gearbox. The LXT variant with the same diesel engine costs Rs 12.99 lakh with the manual gearbox and Rs 16.49 lakh with the automatic. The 2.2-litre mHawk diesel in LXT guise is priced at Rs 16.43 lakh with the manual and Rs 18 lakh with the automatic. The LXT petrol range starts at Rs 14.77 lakh for the 2.0-litre mStallion with RWD and an automatic gearbox. The 4WD manual is priced at Rs 15.60 lakh, while the 4WD automatic costs Rs 17.23 lakh.
The ZXT range starts at Rs 13.99 lakh for the 1.5-litre D117 diesel with RWD and a manual gearbox, rising to Rs 17.49 lakh for the automatic. The 2.2-litre mHawk diesel ZXT is priced at Rs 17.49 lakh with the manual and Rs 18.99 lakh with the automatic. The 2.0-litre mStallion petrol ZXT costs Rs 16.09 lakh with RWD and an automatic, Rs 16.60 lakh with 4WD and a manual, and Rs 17.75 lakh (all prices, ex-showroom) with 4WD and an automatic. Mahindra has specified that these are introductory prices and are valid for deliveries made until November 30, 2026.
