A man has been charged with murder after a woman was fatally stabbed at an Armidale unit early this morning.

Emergency services were called to a unit on Rockvale Road about 2:15am.

Police found the woman, aged 48, with multiple stab wounds.

She was treated by paramedics but died at the scene.

New England Police District Inspector Greg Ryan said police arrested 53-year-old Vincent Raymond Blair at the unit and took him to Armidale Police Station.

"This morning he has been charged with the murder of that 48-year-old female," Inspector Ryan said.

Inspector Ryan said the incident was being treated as a domestic violence murder.

He said a knife had been seized at the scene and he was urging anyone with information to contact police.

"There are other residents within that unit complex … there are a number of witnesses we will be speaking to this morning," he said. 

"Obviously this is devastating for [the victim's] family, and we will continue to support the family and the community around this incident."

Police have established a crime scene and an investigation is underway into the circumstances.

Mr Blair did not appear when his matter was briefly mentioned in bail court today.

He did not apply for bail and the matter will be before the Armidale Court in December.
