Man gets 10-year jail term for raping woman

An Additional District and Sessions Judge (South) has sentenced a man to 10 years in prison after finding him guilty of raping a woman in Boat Basin area. The court announced its verdict in the case and sentenced the accused, Asad, to 10 years' imprisonment and a fine of Rs200,000 as compensation. The court ordered that the compensation be paid to the victim. In its judgment, the court said the accused had claimed that the woman had lodged a false case after he refused to marry her, but he failed to produce any evidence to support the claim. The court observed that a delay in registering a sexual offence case does not, by itself, invalidate the case. It said the victim's statement and the supporting evidence presented against the accused were consistent.
