Manchester City Found Guilty on 114 of 115 Premier League Charges - Tempo.co English
TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Manchester City have been found guilty of 114 out of 115 charges regarding alleged breaches of Premier League financial regulations (FFP). On September 25, The Athletic reported that this decision marks the latest development in an ongoing case against the club since its charges in February 2023.
“The Premier League process remains ongoing, with significant elements to be completed, and subject to strict confidentiality. As such Manchester City FC’s position remains consistent with the club’s statement of February 2023,” a Manchester City spokesperson told The Athletic, as quoted by ANTARA.
Furthermore, Manchester City respects the legal process that has been ongoing for eight years under the Premier League board and executive leadership. However, the sanctions against Manchester City have not yet been determined. All possibilities remain open, and Manchester City is expected to appeal the decision.
This case stems from a four-year Premier League investigation into alleged breaches occurring between 2009 and 2018. City were subsequently charged in February 2023, and the case was referred to an independent commission for a decision.
The league has accused Manchester City of failing to provide accurate financial information, including details regarding revenue and payments to players and managers. The club has also been charged with breaching UEFA financial regulations and the Premier League's Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR). Manchester City has consistently denied all the allegations.
The investigation began after the German newspaper Der Spiegel published leaked financial documents from Manchester City in November 2018.
Under Sheikh Mansour via the Abu Dhabi United Group—which acquired the club in 2008—Manchester City has won eight Premier League titles, four FA Cups, seven League Cups, and one Champions League. The club won six of those titles after being charged in 2023.
Previously, UEFA had also imposed sanctions on Manchester City in February 2020. City was handed a two-year ban from European competitions and a 30 million euros fine for alleged FFP violations linked to documents leaked by Der Spiegel.
However, five months later, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) overturned the ban. CAS ruled that the alleged FFP violations on which the sanction was based were either unproven or time-barred and thus could not be penalized under UEFA regulations.
However, CAS found City guilty of failing to cooperate fully with the UEFA investigation by not submitting a significant amount of requested evidence. CAS described the violation as serious and imposed an 8.8 million pounds fine.
