Manohar Lal reaches Houston for G20 energy talks amid crude supply strain
Union Minister of Power and Housing and Urban Affairs Manohar Lal arrived in Houston on Sunday to represent India at the G20 Energy Ministers' meeting, being held at a time when crude supplies across the world are under considerable strain due to wars in Iran and Ukraine. India’s Consul General in Houston, C Manjunath, received him at the airport.
The G20 Ministerial Meeting on Energy Abundance will be held from Monday to Wednesday under the US G20 Presidency. Alongside the summit, Manohar Lal attended events with the Indian diaspora, took part in a Hindi Diwas programme, visited NASA’s Johnson Space Centre, and launched CGI Houston’s participation in the Swachhata Hi Seva 2026 campaign.
The ministerial meeting will feature key global leaders, including US Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, US Energy Secretary Chris Wright, and White House official Jarrod Agen. During the three-day meeting, Manohar Lal is scheduled to take part in core sessions on energy security and affordable baseload power, permitting and regulatory efficiency, and critical minerals and resilient supply chains. The Indian delegation will advocate pragmatic, technology-neutral pathways to modern infrastructure and share domestic reforms to streamline permitting processes and diversify critical mineral supply lines.
On the eve of the summit, the Indian diaspora organised a public reception for the minister at India House on Sunday evening. Addressing professionals, entrepreneurs, students and cultural leaders, including representatives of HARIT, ICC, IACCGH and SEWA, Manohar Lal praised the community for preserving its cultural connection with India while contributing to the social and economic fabric of the United States. Consul General Manjunath, in his welcome address, highlighted the minister’s decade-long record of public governance and citizen-centric leadership in India.
Earlier in the day, Manohar Lal attended a literary gathering co-hosted by the Consulate General of India, Houston, and the International Hindi Association, Houston Chapter, to mark Hindi Diwas 2026. Speaking at the event, he highlighted the richness, inclusivity and global reach of Hindi, and urged Indian-Americans to preserve and promote their native linguistic heritage abroad so that future generations remain anchored to their roots.
As part of his official itinerary, the minister also visited NASA’s Johnson Space Centre, where Space Centre Houston President and CEO William T Harris personally guided the delegation through the facility. This was followed by talks on expanding bilateral strategic cooperation in the space sector and space-based technologies. At the Consulate premises, Manohar Lal launched CGI Houston’s participation in the nationwide Swachhata Hi Seva 2026 campaign by planting a tree sapling under the “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” movement, and urged the diaspora to bring environmental responsibility into daily life under the theme “Swachhata Mein Sahbhag, Swachh Bharat, Viksit Bharat.”
With the G20 Energy Ministers’ meeting set to begin on Monday, Manohar Lal’s Houston visit combined India’s participation in key discussions on energy and supply chains with outreach to the diaspora, promotion of Hindi, talks on space cooperation, and the launch of an environmental campaign at the Consulate.
