Maple Leafs forward Max Domi failed his physical on Wednesday and will be out indefinitely.

GM John Chayka shared that piece of news from the first day of training camp and it didn’t come as a complete surprise. The team had already announced that he’d suffered complications from off-season surgery on his back.

“He’s going to address that personally,” Chayka told the media.

Domi will likely start the season on long-term injured reserve, opening up much of his $3.75 million (U.S.) cap hit. The 31-year-old has two years remaining on his deal.

While the Maple Leafs will miss Domi’s versatility, his absence won’t alter the lineup a great deal. The Leafs have more than enough forwards in camp, including 12 with NHL experience already listed on the roster beyond Domi, as well as rookie Gavin McKenna.
