Maple Leafs unveil vintage Hometown Remix jersey to mark 100 years of tradition - Toronto Star
Alternate jersey, which makes its debut Sunday in game against New Jersey, blends century-old roots with modern design.
The Maple Leafs unveiled their new “Hometown Remix” jerseys on Tuesday.
Take one of the most recognizable symbols in hockey, give it a vintage look and modernize it for a new generation of fans.
That’s what the Maple Leafs are aiming for with their alternate Hometown Remix jersey, which the NHL team unveiled Monday morning at a popup in a downtown Toronto music store.
The jersey will be worn at five home games this season, part of a leaguewide initiative for each team to have a special edition sweater inspired by each city’s history and fan base. The Leafs jersey is a tribute to their legacy, name and iconic crest dating back a century.
It’s a vintage cream colour with a big navy Maple Leaf crest across the front, inspired by the original 1927 design. It features TORONTO under the crest, along with a detailed leaf-vein pattern woven throughout, including the logo, sleeves and cream strips for an old-school hockey look.
“I feel like the colour scheme really represents Toronto as a whole, and I love the detail within the numbers, the veins,” said Leafs fan Ava Eid after checking out the jersey at Sonic Boom on Spadina Avenue.
“It just feels very Leaf, like it feels very Toronto.”
The premium remix blank jersey retails for $224.99, while versions with player names cost $314.99.
Leafs alumni Wendel Clark (left) and Darcy Tucker sign autographs for fans as the team unveils this season’s alternate jerseys.
The first game featuring the new look is Sunday night against New Jersey Devils at Scotiabank Arena.
Each Hometown Remix date will be a trip down memory lane representing a different Leafs era.
The jersey will also be worn Nov. 19 vs. the Los Angeles Kings (1980s night), Nov. 30 vs. the Philadelphia Flyers (1970s night), Dec. 19 vs. the Tampa Bay Lightning (1990s night) and Feb. 16 vs. the Stanley Cup champion Carolina Hurricanes (the 100th anniversary of the Leafs name and crest).
Leafs alumni Wendel Clark and Darcy Tucker were in attendance and signed autographs for fans.
“Obviously the 100 years that it represents is amazing for us to be a part of it,” Tucker said. “I think both Wendel and myself are very proud to represent the organization and be a part of this, and it’s a pretty special jersey.”
