KZN voters registered for special votes have been urged to turn out in numbers and exercise their constitutional right to vote ahead of the November 4 local government elections.

Martin Meyer, MEC for the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Public Works and Infrastructure and DA deputy provincial leader, made the call outside the Amanzimtoti Civic Centre on Monday after casting his special vote.

Meyer urged voters to use their ballots to bring about the change they want to see in their communities.

Special voting takes place on Monday, November 2, and Tuesday, November 3, ahead of the main election day on Wednesday, November 4.

According to the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), about 2,655,067 voters had been approved for special voting. The special voters include people who cannot reach voting stations because of physical  infirmity or disability, as well as registered voters who will be unable to vote in their wards on election day.

IEC mentioned that of those approved, 678,525 voters will receive home visits, while 1,976 will cast their ballots at their registered voting stations.

"Every vote matters if you have registered as a special voter. Please go out in large numbers to cast your ballots to save our city and province. Stop the chaos and let us start service delivery,” said Meyer.

Asked what voting in the elections meant to him, Meyer said it served as a reminder of the sacrifices made to secure every citizen’s right to vote for their preferred representatives.

"Voting for me is an act of thanks to those who gave so much to us. I would like to see a city that works. My ward councillor works hard, but with a whole city falling apart around us, he can only achieve so much," he said.

Meyer's message to the public is simple: make time and vote.

"I am urging voters to think carefully about their votes, as it is a permanent thing. I voted for the DA in both my ballots because of a city that works for all," he said.
