May cause stampede: 'iPhone langar' in Chandigarh stopped over security risks

Chandigarh authorities have disallowed a proposed "iPhone Langar" announced for September 22 by Amritsar-based businessman and influencer Rakesh Trehan, popularly known as "Raja D King", citing security concerns and the possibility of a large gathering triggering a stampede-like situation.

Trehan had announced the giveaway on social media, saying iPhone 17 and higher models would be distributed as "prasad" in Chandigarh and Mohali.

The plan was initially described as a physical distribution event, with Trehan later indicating that the phones would be given away through an online draw of lots to people saying "Jai Mata Di".

Chandigarh Deputy Commissioner Nishant Yadav has directed the police to stop the proposed event. He said the gathering could become difficult to control and pose a risk to public safety.

“I have given instructions to the Chandigarh Police. This leads to risk of a large uncontrolled gathering that could lead to a stampede-like situation,” Yadav told India Today.

Yadav said the administration had conveyed its decision through the police and suggested that Trehan could instead use the resources for other forms of social service.

"It has been conveyed through the police – it is best to provide relief to society by doing service to old age home, orphans or other programmes rather than do this," he said, adding that this was only a suggestion to Trehan. "But langar per se is not being allowed".

Chandigarh SSP Kanwardeep Kaur said Trehan had not approached the authorities for permission to hold the proposed gathering.

She said any attempt to organise the event without approval would violate restrictions imposed under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS).

"No formal permission has been sought, but since we have heard through various channels and social media handles - so by tomorrow he will be communicated that this event is not being allowed," Kaur said.

The administration’s concerns also stem from Trehan’s earlier "Petrol Langar" initiative in Chandigarh.

Hundreds had gathered at a petrol pump in Sector 10 during heavy rain after Trehan announced fuel coupons for vehicle owners.

The gathering reportedly led to confusion and chaos, following which police intervened, and the petrol pump was shut. The promised fuel was not distributed that day.

Trehan later described the petrol giveaway as postponed and announced plans to reschedule it.

The businessman has previously used social media to promote similar high-profile giveaways and public initiatives. In the latest announcement, he had said the iPhone distribution would coincide with the beginning of iPhone 18 sales in India.

With the proposed event now barred, authorities are expected to prevent any unauthorised gathering at the venue and enforce the applicable restrictions.
