MANILA, Philippines – Team Philippines seeks to pull off what it has not done in the Asian Games for decades.

Bannered by champions Carlos Yulo, Alex Eala, EJ Obiena, Nesthy Petecio, and Annie Ramirez, the country eyes an eight-gold haul in the 20th edition of the continental showpiece in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, from September 19 to October 4.

The Philippines has not surpassed four gold medals in a single Asian Games since 1962, with the country matching that tally in the past two editions in Indonesia in 2018 and China in 2023.

But with the collection of talent the Philippines has at its disposal, sports officials believe that is an achievable goal.

China remains the standard, having won the overall title in each of the last 11 editions since 1982, while host Japan and South Korea stand as the other perennial powers in the field.
