Medbankr launches platform for lifelong control of medical records - Punch Newspapers

A Nigerian health technology company, Medbankr, has launched a patient-controlled platform designed to give Nigerians lifelong ownership and control of their medical records.

The platform brings users’ health histories, including laboratory results, prescriptions, scan reports and clinical notes, from hospitals, laboratories and specialists into one secure digital platform.

In a statement shared with PUNCH Healthwise, Medbankr was developed to address the challenge of fragmented medical records, which are often kept in paper files, clinic folders, WhatsApp screenshots and patients’ memories.

It noted that when patients change doctors, move to another city or visit a different hospital, their medical history may not be available to the new healthcare provider, resulting in repeated tests, restarting appointments and missed follow-ups.

The company said its encrypted Health Vault provides a secure, encrypted platform where users can store their medical records and access them whenever needed, while controlling who can view the information.

Medbankr also uses artificial intelligence-powered tools to help users understand their health, manage medications, track vital signs and navigate the healthcare system.

The platform has five key features, including the Health Vault, Guided Symptom Support, Medication Management, Vital and Health Tracking, and Secure Sharing.

The statement also noted that the platform uses Guided Symptom Support uses AI-assisted assessment to help users understand their symptoms and identify when and where to seek appropriate care, while diagnosis and treatment remain the responsibility of qualified medical professionals.

The company said its Medication Management feature provides reminders, dosage tracking and refill alerts, while Vital and Health Tracking monitors health information and uses AI-powered pattern detection to identify trends or unusual changes that users may need to discuss with their doctors.

It further noted that through the Secure Sharing feature, users can select and share their health records with clinicians, specialists or family caregivers while maintaining control over consent and privacy.

Speaking on the platform, the Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Medbankr, Williams Popoola, said the technology was not designed to replace doctors.

“We’re not building an AI that replaces doctors. Nigeria needs more doctors and better hospitals and that work must continue. What we are building is the layer underneath: the infrastructure that organises a person’s health information, supports smarter decisions, and ensures that when a patient finally sits across from a doctor, that encounter is as informed and productive as possible,” he said.

Popoola described Medbankr as the “memory, continuity, and navigation system” that Nigerian healthcare had lacked.

The company said the platform was designed to complement existing healthcare infrastructure and work alongside licensed healthcare providers and regulated care partners.

“The stakes behind this mission are real. Nigeria has approximately 67,000 doctors serving more than 230 million people, one of the worst physician-to-patient ratios in the world. The average Nigerian visits many different hospitals and clinics across their lifetime, and every handoff is a place where critical information can be lost.

“Where hospitals and doctors are stretched thin, continuity becomes even more important, and that is exactly the infrastructure Medbankr provides: the memory, the organisation, and the navigation that gives Nigerians lifelong ownership of their health story,” it noted.

It added that Medbankr could also be deployed by employers, health insurers, universities, corporate Health Maintenance Organisations and public health programmes as a health continuity and engagement platform.

Medbankr said its application was now available on the Google Play Store and Apple App Store, while more information about the platform could be obtained through its website.
