Meet IIT Kanpur professor bridging microchips and clean water, now a NASI Fellow

Professor Shantanu Bhattacharya of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur has been elected a Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences, India (NASI).

Professor Shantanu Bhattacharya of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur has been elected a Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences, India (NASI).

The fellowship will take effect from January 1, 2027. The recognition has been conferred "in recognition of the outstanding scientific contributions of the scientist".

IIT Kanpur congratulated Prof. Bhattacharya on his election as a NASI Fellow. In a post on X, the institute said, "Heartiest congratulations to Prof. Shantanu Bhattacharya, Department of Mechanical Engineering, on being elected a Fellow of The National Academy of Sciences, India (NASI), effective January 1, 2027." The institute also highlighted his innovative research in the design and development of functional materials and their fabrication processes at different length scales.

According to the official website of IIT Kanpur, Professor Bhattacharya's research is related to Bio MEMS, Lab on Chip, Nano Technology, MicroFluidic system design and fabrication, Sensors, Acoustic Metamaterials, Water Remediation and Energy Storage Devices.

His research interests include Bio MEMS, Lab on Chip, Nano Technology, Microsystems Fabrication and MicroFluids.PROFESSOR BHATTACHARYA'S CURRENT ROLE AND ACADEMIC BACKGROUND

Professor Bhattacharya is currently the Director of CSIR-Central Scientific Instruments Organisation (CSIR-CSIO), Chandigarh. He also holds the additional charge of Director at CSIR-Central Electronics Engineering Research Institute (CSIR-CEERI), Pilani.

He completed his PhD from the University of Missouri, Columbia, USA, in June 2006. He completed his M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Texas Tech University, Lubbock, Texas, USA, in December 2003.
