Meta AI boss Alexandr Wang posted edited photo of PM Narendra Modi, now deleted
Meta AI chief Alexandr Wang has been having his Muse moment on social media, showering his followers with memes and comments highlighting Muse, a now-viral AI tool from Meta. In the middle of all his memes and jokes, Wang also posted an edited photo featuring Prime Minister Narendra Modi, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei. The photo, which is originally from the India AI Impact Summit, shows PM Modi on stage with Altman and Dario. In the edited photo, Wang inserted the furry and cuddly mascot of Muse holding hands with both Dario and Altman, taking a subtle dig at the business rivalry of the two.
If you recall, that moment from the India AI Impact Summit stage went viral earlier this year. In that moment when PM Modi was holding the hands of various AI leaders as they all posed in triumph, Altman and Dario refused to hold hands together, breaking the chain and making the entire moment rather awkward. In the edited photo, the Muse mascot stands between Dario and Altman, holding their hands and hence completing the chain.
Wang’s idea behind the image? Probably some harmless poke at both Dario and Altman, as well as a statement on the “capabilities” of Muse that it was making the two arch rivals join hands. While posting the photo on X, Wang wrote: “What can’t Muse do?” And Wang did not stop there. In another post on X, he shared a screenshot of the edited image and wrote, “let me know where Muse can pick up his Nobel peace prize?” The post was a playful extension of the same joke.
However, several hours after he posted the photo, Wang deleted it. There is no clear explanation for why he removed it. Neither Wang nor Meta has publicly said the post was taken down because of a complaint, controversy or intervention from the Indian government or anyone else.
But a possible explanation is that Wang may simply have wanted to avoid any controversy around an edited image featuring a head of state like the Indian Prime Minister. And more so at a time when the Indian government is still seemingly angry at Meta over a deleted video that PM Modi had posted on Facebook.
In July, Facebook briefly restricted a video posted on Modi’s account. Meta later said the video had been restricted “in error” and restored it. But the incident prompted the Indian government to seek an explanation from the company. Meta’s Chief Global Affairs Officer Joel Kaplan subsequently apologised to India’s IT minister. So, Wang may have taken down the post to avoid stirring up any further controversy.
In recent days Wang is excitedly commenting left and right about Muse. He has been heavily promoting Meta’s latest AI product through memes, jokes and demonstrations.Meta launched Muse on September 8 as a personal AI agent designed to do more than simply answer questions. Unlike a conventional chatbot, Muse can take action on a user’s behalf.
