Meta has revealed that its latest AI model, Muse Spark, has helped mathematicians solve six major research problems. The company said that five of these were open questions across areas like probability, differential equations, group theory, and optimisation. In a separate announcement, Meta’s AI chief Alexander Wang unveiled Muse Gadgets, an open-source project designed to let developers build hardware that works with Muse, alongside its own device, the Muse Home Link.

The math problems, Meta explained, were different from Olympiads in which Muse had achieved gold-medal-level performance – such as maths and physics. Rather, these had no clear answers. “Open research is different. There is no answer key, no guarantee that an approach will work,” Meta said in a blog post. “Making progress means trying and retrying ideas, making new mistakes and resolving them, and sometimes going back to the beginning.”

As per the company, mathematicians used Muse Spark 1.1 and 1.2 in Thinking Mode through the regular Meta AI chat interface, with no custom research modifications.Meta’s Muse Spark helps solve six math problems

The first solution was for probabilit.. Meta noted that this research identified a sharp threshold for fitting random Gaussian points in high dimensions to an ellipsoid. Below the threshold, such an ellipsoid exists with high probability, and above it, it almost certainly does not.

In differential equations, the paper answers a “long-standing question about wave collapse in a model inspired by laser physics.” The study proves that symmetric waves with negative energy in two or more dimensions must collapse in finite time. This settles a question left open in 2015 and confirms a 2002 prediction from simulations in that setting.

In group theory, researchers disproved a proposed rule about mathematical structures that describe symmetry by finding one counterexample of order 384. Meta said Muse Spark generated the GAP search programme that found it.

Coming to optimisation. Researchers worked with Muse Spark to understand when a simple or shortcut method of a math problem could capture the original, and when it could not. In arithmetic physics, researchers connected an idea from number theory with a calculation in string theory. They proved the link works in more cases than previously known, building on ideas from the 1980s. Meta said Muse Spark drafted three core technical sections, which researchers then checked and refined. In non-associative algebra, the research team used Muse Spark to find an exception to a proposed rule about mathematical structures inspired by biology.

As per Meta, one team of mathematicians guided the research and developed the arguments with the model, while a second group reviewed the work.

Previously, OpenAI had claimed that its AI model had solved the Navier-Stokes Millennium Challenge, though that claim was challenged by a pair of researchers who said the company may have used their work to get the solution.Meta wants developers to make AI hardware

Moving to hardware. Meta wants to expand hardware devices for its Muse AI ecosystem. After showing the pendant-like device, Muse Charm, at Meta Connect, the company has announced Muse Gadgets, an open-source platform. Along with it, Meta also announced Muse Home Link.

“Today we are announcing Muse Gadgets! This is an open-source ESP32 firmware and Linux SDK for anyone to make hardware that works with Muse,” Alexandr Wang said. “We are also releasing our own gadget—Muse Home Link—to enable your muse to work with your smart devices (TV, speakers, etc.).” Meta wants to make a hardware ecosystem for Muse.

Muse Home Link is a USB-C powered device that allows Muse to connect to your home network. As per the company, it has manufactured a batch of 5,000 Home Links, which are to be given away to Muse subscribers.

Meanwhile Muse Gadgets can support devices such as a dedicated E Ink display, an HDMI dongle for a television, or a small touchscreen accessory resembling the Muse Charm. Meta is also said to have started a dedicated Discord community for the project.
