Mexico and France Call for Suspension of Veto in Genocide Cases - Tempo.co English

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Mexico and France have called for the suspension of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) veto right in deliberations regarding cases of mass atrocities, including genocide, crimes against humanity, and large-scale war crimes.

As reported by ANTARA, the call was reiterated in a joint statement issued by Mexico's Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday, September 21. The two countries first put forward the proposal back in 2015.

According to the statement, Mexico and France welcomed renewed momentum toward suspending the use of the veto in the United Nations Security Council in cases involving mass atrocities, including genocide, crimes against humanity, and large-scale war crimes.

Over the past four months, 21 countries from Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean, and Asia have joined in supporting the proposal. As a result, 128 countries have officially declared their support.

In addition, Mexico and France also welcomed the statement by British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband regarding his country's willingness to support the declaration.

This move makes the UK the second permanent member of the UNSC to commit to limiting the use of the veto regarding urgent humanitarian issues.
