It can happen on an overnight train. You fall asleep, wake up and suddenly realise that your destination has already passed. The first question is usually, can I use the same ticket to go back? The answer is generally no. If you have crossed your destination because you were asleep, the safest option is to get down at the next station and arrange a fresh journey back.

Your original ticket is meant for the journey and direction for which it was issued. Indian Railways does not automatically provide a free return trip simply because you missed your station while sleeping.GET DOWN AT THE NEXT STATION

Once you realise that your station has been missed, do not simply remain on the train hoping to travel back on the same ticket. Get off at the next convenient station and check the available trains towards your destination.

You may need to purchase a new ticket for the return journey, depending on the train and travel option available.

Your original ticket does not normally give you the right to travel in the opposite direction after crossing your destination. The ticket is issued for the journey booked by the passenger.

So, if you were travelling from Delhi to Lucknow and slept through Lucknow, you cannot assume that the same ticket can be used to travel from the next station back to Lucknow. A fresh ticket may be required for that portion of the journey.CAN TTE OR RAILWAY STAFF HELP?

Yes, it is a good idea to tell the TTE or railway staff what happened. They can guide you about the next station, available trains and the procedure you need to follow.

However, passengers should not assume that the TTE can simply arrange a free return journey on the same ticket.DON’T PULL THE EMERGENCY CHAIN

Missing a station is not an emergency and is not a valid reason to pull the alarm chain. The emergency chain is meant for genuine emergencies such as a medical crisis or fire. Misusing it can lead to legal action.SET AN ALARM BEFORE YOU SLEEP

The easiest way to avoid the problem is also the simplest. Before sleeping on an overnight train, set an alarm for a little before your expected arrival time. You can also inform a co-passenger, TTE or coach attendant if you are worried about missing the station.

A few minutes of planning can save you an extra journey, a new ticket and a lot of unnecessary stress.- EndsPublished By: vaishnavi parasharPublished On: Sep 13, 2026 12:38 IST
