Mom Wakes To Find ‘Mysterious Bit of Hair’ on Couch—Then Discovers Truth - Newsweek

A mom woke to find mysterious clumps of hair dotted around her living room couch, and things only became more worrying from there.

The stress of the school-day morning routine is a familiar challenge for many American parents.

A 2021 OnePoll survey of 2,000 parents found that 58 percent consider school-day mornings the most stressful part of their day, while 60 percent find it difficult to balance their children's morning routine with their own.

Mom-of-two Ellie Kneeshaw, from Yorkshire, England, is all too familiar with the chaos of the morning school run. But the challenge she found herself facing with her 4-year-old daughter, Aurora, was far more unusual than most parents encounter.

Kneeshaw told Newsweek the day had started like any other.

"We woke up at 7:30 a.m. I gave my daughter, Aurora, her breakfast in the kitchen and went upstairs to brush my teeth, make her little brother a bottle, and bring him downstairs," she added.

Kneeshaw said Aurora was left downstairs on her own for "between five and 10 minutes" while she tended to her brother, Rowan. When the mom returned downstairs, she quickly noticed "a mysterious bit of hair" on the couch and another clump on the floor nearby.

"I opened the curtains and saw lots of little strands of hair on the couch," Kneeshaw said. "I asked Aurora what it was, and that's when she said, 'Look, it's my hair. I've cut it all so it's short like mummy's.'"

Turning to look at Aurora, the busy mom could barely believe what she was seeing: Aurora had given herself a haircut.

"She had cut the front strands to her shoulders," Kneeshaw said. "I'd say around 5 inches was cut off."

Kneeshaw had left a pair of toenail scissors within Aurora's reach and, thinking she was doing her mom a favor, the 4-year-old decided to give herself a trim.

"I was mortified," she said. "I think it was more because she had found the scissors. I asked her to come closer, and she asked me not to shout. I explained, 'I'm not angry that your hair is short. I'm upset that you've used scissors without a grown-up.'"

Rather than try to fix her daughter's hair herself, Kneeshaw decided to take her to someone a little more qualified.

"I left it to a hairdresser. It was cut so short, I had no idea what to do," Kneeshaw said. "She goes to a specialist school, so they were very understanding. They spoke with her, had a little laugh when they saw her hair, and tried their best to style it."

Though it made for a stressful morning, once the dust had settled and Aurora's hair had been fixed as best it could be by the hairdresser, Kneeshaw was able to laugh about what happened.

She decided to share her story to make people laugh and show the reality of life with kids.

"Parenting isn't always organized, with a rigid structure and children who look neat and tidy all the time," she said.

"Sometimes, mishaps like this occur. It's never the end of the world. It's hair. It will grow back."
