Monsoon withdrawal from one side, rain on the other: Read forecast here

Several parts of India are likely to see heavy rain on Wednesday, September 23, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall and isolated extremely heavy rain over parts of central and southern India.

The forecast comes as the southwest monsoon continues its gradual withdrawal from northwest India, while a depression over the Bay of Bengal is moving west-northwestwards and is expected to intensify further.

The IMD has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall, with isolated extremely heavy rainfall, over Chhattisgarh, coastal parts of Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and Telangana on September 23.

Heavy rain is also likely at isolated places in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya, Bihar, parts of Karnataka, Jharkhand, Kerala, Konkan and Goa, Maharashtra, and West Bengal and Sikkim.

The most intense rainfall threat is linked to the depression over the Bay of Bengal.

The IMD has also forecast thundersqualls, with winds reaching 50-60 kmph, over isolated places in Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and Telangana.

For Delhi, Haryana and much of northwest India, Wednesday is expected to be comparatively inactive.

The IMD’s rainfall forecast classifies Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi as dry for September 23, while isolated rain is forecast over West Uttar Pradesh.

This dry spell comes as the southwest monsoon begins retreating from the region.

The IMD said conditions are favourable for further withdrawal from remaining parts of Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi, along with some parts of Rajasthan, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and West Uttar Pradesh over the next two days.

Assam and Meghalaya are expected to receive fairly widespread rain, while Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and Telangana remain under the influence of the Bay of Bengal system.

The IMD has also identified a low to moderate flash-flood risk in parts of Odisha, parts of Andhra Pradesh and Chhattisgarh through the morning of September 23, particularly in some watersheds and nearby areas.
