Months after Rs 45-lakh wedding, gold gifts, techie dies by suicide over dowry
Just four months after her marriage, a 24-year-old IT engineer died by suicide at her residence in Pune on Thursday night, with her family alleging prolonged harassment over dowry.
The womanβs parents said they spent Rs 45 lakh on the wedding and gave 116.64 grams of gold, but her husband and in-laws allegedly continued demanding another Rs 5 lakh to buy a car and subjected her to mental and physical harassment over the demand.
The deceased, identified as Vaishnavi Omkar Gisre, lived with her husband at a residential society in Puneβs Wadachiwadi. After her death, her father, Pravin Raghunath Jarande, 51, who is from Purandar taluka, approached police and filed a complaint.
According to the complaint, Vaishnavi married Omkar Sanjay Gisre, 28, on May 9 this year. Her family claims they spent around Rs 45 lakh on the wedding and gave 10 tolas of gold as gifts.
But, the family alleges, things changed after the wedding. Vaishnavi was repeatedly asked to bring Rs 5 lakh from her parents to help buy a four-wheeler, the complaint states. Her family has alleged that she was also subjected to mental and physical harassment over the demand.
Police said Vaishnavi died by suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan at her residence on Thursday night.
Following her fatherβs complaint, police registered a case against her husband, father-in-law Sanjay Mahadev Gisre, 49, and mother-in-law Rupali Sanjay Gisre, 42. They have been booked under relevant provisions of the Dowry Prohibition Act and for abetting suicide. Further investigation is underway.
