(Photos: Supplied/Apinya Wipatayotin) Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Chon Buri has welcomed a new member of its pygmy hippopotamus family. The newborn’s sex has not yet been determined but it is a niece or nephew for Moo Deng, the zoo’s star attraction.
The good news was announced by Natural Resources and Environment Minister Suchart Chomklin on Thursday.
The calf was born on Wednesday to 14-year-old mother Moo Manao and seven-year-old father Moo Toon, who is Moo Deng’s older brother.
The birth has sparked excitement among Moo Deng’s fans and animal lovers nationwide.
Mr Suchart said he had received a report from Khao Kheow Open Zoo director Narongwit Chodchoi that veterinarians had closely monitored the mother and calf following the birth. Both were found to be in good health.
The newborn has begun moving around and exploring its surroundings, while Moo Manao has stayed close to care for her offspring. The pair have since been allowed to remain together as normal.
However, the mother remains protective of her calf and has been reluctant to let zoo staff approach too closely, a natural maternal instinct, Mr Suchart said.
The zoo is preparing to officially introduce the newborn to the public and Moo Deng’s fans in the near future.
Moo Toon and Moo Manao held a wedding ceremony on Jan 24, 2025, after Thai zoos planned to expand the ‘Moo’ population. Moo Manao was transferred from the Nakhon Ratchasima Zoo to mate with Moo Toon in Chon Buri.
