According to a statement issued by the Mauritanian Coast Guard, more than 160 migrants, including 17 children, were rescued from a boat that was about to sink off the coast of Mauritania. The Coast Guard emphasized that this was the second such operation carried out this week.

The statement noted that the migrants were “rescued in a state of exhaustion due to the boat’s unsafe conditions and the ordeal of their journey.” Last week, more than 300 migrants were rescued off the coast of this West African nation on the Atlantic coast.

Hundreds of people—mostly from Senegal, The Gambia, Guinea, and Mali—fleeing to Europe have been intercepted and rescued in Mauritanian waters in recent months. During this time, hundreds of other migrants have died or gone missing on numerous sinking boats and vessels.
